About Me

I came to bioinformatics through my work as a scientific systems administrator. Perhaps as a result I approach the field from an infrastructure builder’s perspective. Currently most interested in pathogen bioinformatics and initiatives that make bioinformatics more accessible. I am also a long-standing member of the Galaxy community and somewhat of a geek when it comes to scientific workflow systems. I’m an avid advocate for open source and open science. Growing up and living in South Africa has also driven me to engage with the inequalities that operate within our (scientific) world.

I try and split my days between coordinating a systems and software engineering team, training (I’m a Software Carpentry instructor and have taught Python for several years) and furthering my own studies (a few years ago I decided to complement the skills I have learned on the job with formal qualifications).

Skills/Topics I teach

  • Python
  • Linux
  • Galaxy
  • M. tuberculosis bioinformatics
  • NGS analysis (RNAseq)
  • Scientific systems administration
  • More… depending on time and training materials
